Harker Heights now has a fully staffed 24/7 gym.
Derek Tittle opened The Field House June 1 in Harker Heights Plaza. The 22,000-square-foot store sits between Twin Wolves MMA and Lone Star RV Center, its front window mostly blocked by a black wall.
While its location is nondescript, the strip mall’s three bars and E Center draw up to 2,000 people every weekend, Tittle said.
“If they want a good gym, they’re going to know where to find it.”
The gym has about 300 members, and boasts an 8,000-square-foot Crossfit area, 3,000 square feet for free weights, giant tires for bodybuilding, a smoothie bar, a female-only gym called Her House and a kid playhouse. After it’s constructed, the sauna will accommodate up to 20 people.
“It’s not crowded, you don’t have to worry about people in your way, the staff’s real nice and no one ignores you,” said Killeen resident Angie Rivera, who uses the gym five days a week. “It’s 24/7. I have kids and I like to try to get it in before they wake up during the school year.”
Along with Zumba, cycling, boot camp and Insanity classes, the all-purpose room also hosts comedy relief classes, Tittle said.
“That’s the first I’ve ever heard of it (in a gym).”
Tittle, who has owned The Field House in Temple for 1½ years, said the growth of western Bell County persuaded him to expand to Harker Heights.
“It’s far enough away from the Temple location that it wasn’t going to create any overflow,” he said. “I feel like we’ve got an excellent location. ... The space we got for the price we got it for — it was a no-brainer.”
Tittle has 12 years of personal training experience and has been a weightlifter for 23 years.
“This is my drug,” he said. “My dad got me involved at 14 years old … When you choose to get into this, it’s a way of life - the type of diet you have, the determination that you have to come to the gym every day. It definitely is a change of life for the good, strengthens your bones, keeps you looking healthy and young.”
Chadrick Turner said The Field House fits in with his weight loss and strength maintenance goals.
“I always liked the feel of the old-school gyms, and this really has that feel for me,” he said. “You can drop your weights without getting in trouble.”
