Harker Heights joined the social networking world Thursday with the launching of the city government’s first Facebook page and Twitter account.
Assistant City Manager Patty Brunson said their goal in adopting social networking is to enhance communication between citizens and the city.
“Most people today have some types of Facebook or Twitter account,” she said. “If they ‘friend’ or ‘like’ us, we can send updates through there about things that are going on in the city. For instance, we could have sent out notices about the Halloween Hoopla.”
The city notified residents about the launch through newsletters and the Harker Heights website. Announcements were also made on water bills, Brunson said. but the city will go a step further in getting the word out by making the messages mobile.
“We’re also preparing bumper stickers that will go on the back of city vehicles saying, ‘Like us on Facebook’ or something like that,” she said.
The bumper stickers will help inform people who drive through Harker Heights but don’t live within the city limits.
“Since we have a large military community, we may have some people who don’t live here but their spouses do, or they have rental property here and want to keep in touch with what’s going on in the city,” Brunson said. “This will be an easy way for them to do that.”
