Kicking off various city-wide National Night Out events in residential neighborhoods Oct. 1, the Harker Heights Police Department and local businesses are having a party at the Harker Heights Community Park, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.
This family-friendly event will have games and activities and will serve free hot dogs, chips and drinks to the first 2,000 people. Local vendors also will be on hand to give free samples and gift cards.
“This is a great opportunity for people to get to know their neighbors and have fun,” said Harker Heights Police Chief Michael Gentry. “People can play games and learn what steps they can take to make their neighborhoods a safer place.”
National Night Out, “America’s Night Out Against Crime,” began in 1984 as an effort to promote involvement in crime prevention activities, police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie. It sends a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.
