The Harker Heights Kiwanis Club met Tuesday at the Central Texas Homebuilders Association for the induction of its new slate officers for 2013-2014.

About 40 members and relatives attended the annual event, which included a meal, remarks by Esabell Zellmar, outgoing president, recognition of the 2012-2013 officers and directors and an awards presentation.

Kiwanis member Darrell Charlton was given the perfect attendance award.

Retired Gen. Robert Shoemaker and Dick Dinwiddie were presented with Legion of Honor pins and certificates for 35 years of service to the Kiwanis Club.

Diane Thompson was named Kiwanian of the Year.

Stepping down from their leadership positions were Esabell Zellmar, president; Darrel Charlton, treasurer; and board members Mariko Cross, Gladys Swindle and David McClure.

Kiwanis Lt. Gov. Steven Kirkpatrick officially presided over the installation of the new officers.

The officers for 2013-2014 will be Paul Loughran, president; Pete Laessig, president-elect; Charles Sweeney, vice-president; Vivian Marschik, secretary; and Randy Stone, treasurer.

The Board of Directors will be Richard Dinwiddie, James Hoyle, Jim McKinnon, Jeanette McNiesh, Mike Miller, Jos Portmann and Diane Thompson.

“We need to grow our membership,” said new president Paul Loughran.

The Harker Heights Kiwanis meets at noon every Tuesday of the month at the Central Texas Homebuilders’ Association at 445 East Central Texas Expressway.

Some of the service projects provided by the club during 2012-2013 were the American flag program, pancake supper, fruit baskets for Indian Oaks Living Center and AARP income tax counselors.

Donations included five scholarships for Harker Heights High School students and funds for the Children’s Miracle Network, Peaceable Kingdom and Ellison High School Leadership Academy for Builders Club members.
