The holidays were in the air Wednesday at St. Paul Chong Hasang Catholic Church parish center as the Ladies of Charity organized ornamental wreaths, centerpieces, wall-hangings and other hand-crafted goodies in preparation for their 17th annual holiday bazaar.

“This is just a small part of what all we’ll have next weekend. That whole room in there will be filled,” President Sylvia Schnapp said, motioning toward the large parish hall.

The holiday bazaar is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 3, and 8 to 11 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 4, at the parish center, 2412 Stillhouse Lake Road, Harker Heights.

Proceeds from the bazaar go to local charitable organizations like Meals on Wheels, Harker Heights Food Care Center, and the Ladies of Charity thrift store on South Ann Street, among others.

“Every dollar goes back into the community,” Publicity Chairperson Jane Barr said. “(The bazaar) is our biggest single fundraiser of the year.”

Many items for sale

A variety of handmade crafts, baked goods, Thanksgiving and Christmas decorations, gifts, religious items, fabric, jewelry and lots of books will be for sale at the bazaar, along with breakfast, lunch and dinner prepared by the Knights of Columbus.

While parents shop, kids can make their own homemade goodies at the children’s crafts table. And rumor has it that Mother Hubbard will make an appearance for story time with the kids.

“That would be ‘young’ Mother Hubbard, not ‘old,’ said Jean Flores, a seamstress and one of the newest members of the Ladies of Charity.

The Ladies will also raffle off gift cards and merchandise donated by local businesses.

“We have this spectacular raffle,” Schnapp said. “That’s what you see when you walk first walk in – the raffle table.”

Tickets are $1 each or six for $5 and winners will be announced at the close of the bazaar on Sunday.
