Marta Ramos started collecting antiques for her home 20 years ago.

“I love to decorate my home,” Ramos said.

Her closets and garage became full of stuff, and she turned her love into a successful business.

Ramos now owns Marta’s Room Antiques on Farm-to-Market 439 on the edge of the Nolanville and Belton city limits.

Ramos was born in Puerto Rico. She served in the Army for a few years and then married a soldier.

Like many military spouses, she followed her husband around during his military career. Her husband now serves as a military contractor and they decided to make Central Texas their home after her husband was stationed at Fort Hood.

“We love Texas,” Ramos said.

Ramos started crafting with wood pieces, sewing and painting as a way to bring in an income for her family while being a stay-at-home mom taking care of her handicapped son.

“Today’s women are inspiring entrepreneurs,” Ramos said, adding that this generation of women is finding ways to make a living while also caring for their families.

Ramos opened a start-up shop in a mall in San Antonio before her husband was stationed at Fort Hood. She worked for the Killeen Independent School District’s English as a Second Language program for 10 years and continued restoring antiques after work.

She rented another shop along the interstate for many years before buying her current property four years ago. Ramos had to put herself back on the map after moving to her current location. So, she began her “Marta and Friends Vintage Shows” in April 2010.

She hosts shows twice a year in the spring and the fall. Between 60 and 90 vendors come from across the state to sell their antique and craft items at Ramos’ property.

Ramos calls herself a “collector at heart and caretaker of antique goods.” She loves the recycling and repurposing mentality.

“These things bring back memories for people,” she said, adding she enjoys sharing her passion with people and making friends along the way. “I love the human contact and the joy when someone finds a special piece in my shop.”

Marta’s Room Antiques is at 10349 Farm-to-Market 439 in Belton. The next Marta and Friends Vintage Show is Nov. 7-8. For more information, call 254-681-7752 or go to
