Chiropractors may be commonplace around Harker Heights, but female chiropractors are often difficult to find.
Elizabeth Nixon, owner of Back in Motion Chiropractic, is one of only four female chiropractors out of about 30 in the Central Texas area. She recently opened a Harker Heights practice that specializes in pediatrics, maternity and sports injuries for clients of all ages.
From a young age, chiropractors were a part of Nixon’s life. She began receiving chiropractic alignments when she was 3, and was inspired to follow that career path by a childhood visit to a male chiropractor.
“Growing up, my chiropractor was also my primary care physician, and we would see him first,” Nixon said. He was the one that told her there were not enough female chiropractors in the world.
“I just never even thought a female could be a chiropractor, but it took him telling me that, and I thought, that’s what I want to be,” she said.
Nixon, a Harker Heights native and Killeen High School graduate, earned her doctorate from Texas Chiropractic College in Pasadena and graduated second in her class. After practicing with a colleague in Belton for three years, Nixon decided to open her own office in Harker Heights.
Wilma Thorn has been a client of Nixon’s since 2009, and now her husband and their children are clients, too. Although her husband was leery of chiropractors, he now feels comfortable with Nixon.
“She made him feel OK, and not afraid of chiropractors,” Thorn said.
Emily Kirkpatrick, who was treated by Nixon during her pregnancy, said the treatments helped when she delivered her son, Preston. Nixon, who is 7½ months pregnant with her first child, explained that women who have routine spinal adjustments often experience faster labor with fewer complications.
“With maternity, there’s a change in the center of gravity and the alignment of the spine — that can affect things in the pregnancy,” she said. “Hormones in pregnancy cause muscles in the body to relax, allowing it to adjust to the changing form, and the spine isn’t spared at all.”
Preston Kirkpatrick, now 3 months old, is also a client of Nixon’s. His mother began taking him for adjustments when he was 5 days old.
“She is very gentle but effective,” Kirkpatrick said. “I’ve always felt extremely comfortable, and never felt like she’s overdone it.”
