NOLANVILLE — Police Cpl. Michelle Cortez was named Nolanville’s Employee of the Quarter at the City Council’s regular meeting April 3.

Cortez, known by neighbors as the “Christmas Lights Lady,” because of her enthusiasm for the season, began as a reserve officer with the Nolanville Police Department in 2003. Becoming full-time in 2012 after her mother died, Cortez now handles patrolling, paperwork, school visits and numerous other duties.

“I have a lot of friends here, they’ll wave and honk,” Cortez said, referring to her patrol duties. “They’ll call me by my first name because that’s how I introduce myself. You get to know a lot of people here and they get to know you.”

According to Mayor Christina Rosenthal, Cortez once took it upon herself to build and paint the inside of the station’s local patrol room.

“We were having so much problems with wiring and no place to hang things, and I asked my chief if it was OK to do my thing,” Cortez said. “So I gutted it, studded, it and did all the electrical all up to code.”

Cortez said getting the award lets her know she’s appreciated and encourages her to continue to try and make a difference.

“This is a small town and it fits me perfect,” she said. “You get to know your neighbors and do good community policing.”

Other action

Council members also held the first public hearing to discuss a new 28.4-acre tract of land that will be annexed into the city. The land, in the Bella Charca subdivision, will eventually turn into the next phase of the housing development. Residents made no public comment.

The Public Works Department approved eight new housing permits, according to city documents.

Nolanville City Manager Stephen Pearl announced a possible collaboration between the city and Texas A&M University-Central Texas. The university would create a state of the city report by collecting data on community conditions such as population trends, economic trends, land use and road conditions. The report would then be used by the city to help plan future design, according to city documents. No final agreement has been reached.
