NOLANVILLE — With summer fading away and the new school year just around the corner, the Nolanville Police Department wants to help area school children.

For the second year, the Nolanville Police Department is collecting school supplies and monetary donations to aid students in Nolanville’s elementary schools. Police Chief Gary Kent hopes the back-to-school drive exceeds last year’s donations.

“Last year’s turnout was great,” Kent said. “We had contracting companies from Fort Hood participate as well as area businesses. We want to get the word out now to the community to let people know that it’s that time of year again.”

With supplies and donations heading to both Nolanville and Cavazos Elementary schools, the back to school drive needs the basics.

“We need paper, pencils, erasers, glue, backpacks, and if you can donate money that works too,” Kent said. “Just drop the items off at the police station and we will make sure that they get to where they need to go. From there, the teachers can distribute supplies to whichever kids need them the most.”

NPD will collect items until Oct. 18.

“I think this is a very important event, helping our children in need is a big deal,” Kent said. “We want to let the children and community know that we as the police department are here to help. We want children to know that the police are people you can run to, not run from.”

Entering his third year as police chief, Kent would like to continue the back to school drive for the foreseeable future.

“While I am the chief here in Nolanville, this is something that my department will take part in.”
