NOLANVILLE — While on vacation in south Texas before Christmas, Public Works Director Bob Pena got a very surprising phone call.

The School of Wags, a nonprofit organization dedicated to rescuing and rehoming large breed dogs, primarily Mastiffs, wanted to donate a pallet, or 1,000 pounds of dog food, to the city’s animal shelter.

“Since I wasn’t in the area to accept the donation I told them to just leave it at City Hall. I just didn’t expect to see what I saw,” Pena said.

To show his appreciation for their generous donation to the animal shelter, he presented representatives from the School of Wags with a certificate of appreciation at the Nolanville City Council meeting Jan 2.

“We know that there is a dire need here in Nolanville, so whatever we can do to help, let us know,” said Kathryn Leisinger, the “Dean of Wags.” “We’ll help you in any way we can by reaching out to our ‘waggers’ via social media.”

To ensure that local shelters and rescues had enough kibble to go around during the holiday season, School of Wags supporters came together to raise $710 for 7,070 pounds of Pedigree dog food to be distributed to area shelters and rescues Dec. 11. In addition to Nolanville, other area shelters were recipients of School of Wags donations.
