It was only fitting that the Panamanian Association of Central Texas held their 24th annual Night of Fun at the Disabled American Veterans hall in Harker Heights.
The service organization is looking for younger members just like the DAV, VFW and other veteran groups.
Members of the Panamanian Association of Central Texas in Killeen celebrated their heritage over the weekend with the fun night Friday and a picnic in Belton Saturday.
Chapter President Victor Beckles has been part of the organization since its inception.
“We are always looking for younger members,” Beckles said. “It seems that everyone knows one another through some sort of acquaintance or relative.
“But there does not seem to be a lot of people under the age of 50.”
The organization gives out scholarships, volunteers at soup kitchens around the holidays and holding their big events around Labor Day. The association sponsors a scholarship in honor of Alexander Vernon — a former member.
Friday night’s event featured D.J. Chris Mendive and singer/song writer Carlos Allen providing the entertainment.
Pamela Jimenez helped provide the food with her famous empanadas.
“They are homemade with flour, ground beef and seasoning,” Jimenez said. “I can’t tell you the ingredients.”
