Registration is down 36 percent for the third annual City Wide Garage Sale, scheduled for Aug. 3.

While about 80 people registered at this time last year, 51 homeowners have thrown their sales in the ring for this year’s event.

Harker Heights Activities Coordinator Heather Cox said 100 people usually participate in the event, which is exempted from the city’s $5 garage sale fee.

Today is the deadline for residents to sign up for their sale to be advertised on a map on the city’s website next week, a news release stated. But residents can sign up until Aug. 2.

People can stumble upon rare finds during this year’s sale, such as a 1918 Victorian-era couch, Cox said.

Shoppers also find treasures in others unused items. During a past garage sale, a woman sold Hoverounds that belonged to her husband before he died.

“(For the buyers), it was a blessing for them to find these Hoveround chairs really cheap,” Cox said.

Residents will hold garage sales at their homes from dawn until dusk, according to the release.

City ordinance requires in-person registration, which can be done at City Hall, 305 Miller’s Crossing, the Recreation Center, 307 Miller’s Crossing, and the Activities Center, 400 Indian Trail.

“Those who register are also encouraged to do some creative advertising of their own,” the release stated. “The overall goal is to encourage residents to get out in their community, meet their neighbors and hopefully purchase some good finds.”

The rain date is Aug. 10.
