The city will soon be home to not one, but two large furniture stores. Rooms To Go, a furniture chain with stores across the country, will join Furniture Row in Harker Heights.
The city issued a building permit for the 38,000-square-foot store at the end of January, Planning and Development Director Fred Morris said.
Since then, the four-acre site at the corner of East Central Texas Expressway and Helms Road, just east of IHOP and north of Carl Levin Park, has been a bustle of activity, with a construction trailer, piles of dirt and other equipment moving in.
Morris said the new construction reflects the economical health of the area. “Rooms To Go locating in Harker Heights further demonstrates the strong regional economy,” he said.
City Manager Steve Carpenter said Furniture Row, which is across the highway from the Rooms to Go site, had a “significant impact” on the city sales tax coffers. He expects the same benefits from Rooms to Go.
“I think it honestly will help,” Carpenter said. “It will bring people in and hopefully they’ll shop at other places while they’re here.”
City officials were unaware of a projected completion date for the store.
