City Attorney Burk Roberts swore in new Place 1 Councilman Hal Schiffman after officials bade farewell to outgoing Councilman John Reider during a farewell reception Tuesday.

Heights council members presented Reider with a desk clock before he walked out of the council chamber. “This is it for me,” Reider said. “I’m done. I’ve enjoyed it. I want to give other citizens the chance for Place 1.”

Reider thanked other council members for working as a unit. “Doing a good job at the city council is very easy with your help,” Reider said. “We get in, we talk about the facts and we get out. If there’s an issue, we always work it out. We never work them out in the paper.”

Councilmen Sam Murphey and Spencer Smith canvassed the votes for Place 1 and Place 3, and confirmed Saturday’s unofficial voting numbers. Schiffman earned 484 out of 716 total votes to win the Place 1 seat over Stu McLennan and Donald Sandlin.

City Manager Steve Carpenter said he was excited to have business professional Schiffman on the council during a time of rapid local economic development. “Hal has a huge background in economic development,” Carpenter said. “I expect him to be a huge benefit to us.”

After running unopposed for Place 3, Mayor Pro Tem Pat Christ secured his fourth term in office, garnering 599 votes. Schiffman’s and Christ’s terms will expire in 2016.

Schiffman said he enjoyed campaigning, during which he got to meet with people who shared his vision for Harker Heights.

“I was able to knock on hundreds and hundreds of doors and visit with many, many people who have a desire to see Harker Heights grow, prosper and be successful,” Schiffman said. “It is very gratifying to receive expressions of their confidence and their support, and especially when I can … give value to their support in a successful effort.”
