Harker Heights attorney Gene Silverblatt was the featured speaker at the monthly meeting of “Trade Secrets” Oct. 17 at the Harker Heights Activities Center.

“Trade Secrets” not only gives participants a chance to become a part of a conversation about a topic, but enables them to ask questions and learn from an expert.

The 21 senior citizens in attendance openly shared their opinions on the topic at hand: A Relative Has Just Died. What’s my Next Step? Topics included calling a funeral director, dialing 911, notifying relatives and calling a lawyer.

“Attorneys are definitely here to help you in a time of crisis like this, but we are reactive by nature,” Silverblatt said. “That’s not a bad thing because we eventually become part of the process, regardless. When someone in your family dies, however, steps you’ve taken to be prepared and proactive will diminish the chaos of the moment.”

When a person dies there is not only grief involved, but confusion becomes part of the process. The question, “What is my next step?” is a very real and disturbing part of the equation.

“Now is the time to develop relationships with people who will help you through the dark days,” Silverblatt said. “Doing this in the good times and not when everyone is in a crisis mode is the best plan.”
