The Harker Heights Kiwanis Club was finally able to throw a surprise 90th birthday party for longtime member retired Gen. Robert M. Shoemaker.

His actual birthday was Feb. 18.

“We had an ice cream cake made about three weeks ago and were prepared to surprise him, but he wasn’t in attendance that week nor the following week,” said Vivian Marschik, club secretary. “We were unsure when he might finally appear so I took the cake home with me and set it in my freezer.”

Shoemaker was also honored by Shoemaker High School, named in his honor, on his actual birthday.

After all club business was completed, members serenaded him with “Happy Birthday.”

Not only did the club celebrate his big milestone birthday, they also lauded him for his 35 years of membership to the club.

“Two surprise birthday parties is really something,” he said.
