Spc. Jong Dal Lee died in a fiery car crash Sunday night in Harker Heights, Ford Hood officials said.

Lee, 21, was driving westbound on U.S. Highway 190 when his vehicle struck a pillar under the Farm-to-Market 2410 bridge, police said. He was the sole occupant.

When officers arrived on the scene at 11:55 p.m., the car was on fire, police said.

“The vehicle was fully engulfed in flames,” said Sgt. Roosevelt Wilson of the Harker Heights Police Department.

The Harker Heights Fire Department arrived and extinguished the fire, according to Fire Chief Jack Collier.

“The call came in at 11:56 and we arrived at 12:01,” he said. “After we got on scene, it only took about five minutes to get (the fire) under control.”

Justice of the Police Garland Potvin pronounced Lee dead at the scene at 12:30 a.m. Monday. An autopsy was ordered.

The accident, which shut down the highway for a short time, is under investigation by the Harker Heights Police Department.

Lee, of Arcadia, Calif., had been stationed at Fort Hood since 2010.
