VFW Veterans Day

The 720th Military Police Battalion presents a plaque to the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3892 during the Veterans Day Ceremony on Monday, Nov. 11, 2013.

A crowd of more than 100 veterans, Fort Hood soldiers, Cub Scouts and family members gathered Monday at the Veterans Day ceremony hosted by Post 3892 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Harker Heights.

Adjutant Chuck Duncan served as master of ceremonies for the event.

Following the posting of the colors, Joanine Lewis sang the National Anthem and Chaplain Greg Hartman led the opening benediction.

Boy Scout Troop 271 performed the salute to all armed services.

Special guest speaker for the ceremony was Lt. Col. David Stender, commander of the 720th Military Police Battalion, 89th Military Police Brigade.

“In my speech I mentioned not only thanking the veterans for their service everyday, but as we downsize, we need to focus on hiring veterans first,” he said, adding it was an honor to speak at the ceremony and to represent the Army.

“When the opportunity comes along to help a veteran, we should do that and take advantage of the strong foundation that former military men and women can provide just as they did after World War II and other conflicts.”

Veterans Day is near and dear to Lewis, who served 14 years on active duty and four years in the Reserve and National Guard.

“From a singer’s point of view, I’m honored to sing at these events,” she said. “I would do it in any kind of weather or other conditions because it means the world to me.”

Lewis’ husband is in the military and her three children also serve.

At the conclusion of the ceremony was the laying of a wreath to honor fallen soldiers, a 21-gun salute and the playing of taps.
