Members of the chamber’s 2014 Vision XXI class toured Seton Medical Center Harker Heights and Metroplex Hospital March 7.

At Seton, the class heard from CEO Matt Maxwell and took a tour of the facility led by Melissa Purl, director of marketing.

At Metroplex, Robin Bodkin, executive director of patient experience, led tours. Dr. Don Daniels also shared information about the services provided by the hospital.

Maxwell said the opening day at Seton actually began about 25 miles away in the emergency room at Scott & White in Temple.

It was 12:01 a.m. on June 17, 2012, and was the night a gunman walked into the ER, pulled out a gun and was ultimately shot by law enforcement, turning that part of the hospital into a crime scene.

Only trauma patients were allowed into the hospital.

All other patients who needed care were diverted to Killeen, Waco and other surrounding hospitals.

“At 12:05 a.m., we received our first call from S & W,” Maxwell said. “At 12:10 a.m., four ambulances pulled up into our emergency bay.”

Seton’s medical and surgical services in both inpatient and outpatient settings are fully equipped with cutting-edge technology.

The variety of services available at Seton include cardiology, cardiac rehabilitation, chaplaincy and pastoral care, emergency care, family medicine, gastroenterology, respiratory, laboratory, nursing, otolaryngology, orthopedics, heart and vascular, ICU, outpatient surgery, pulmonary, radiology, sleep lab, surgical surgeries and women’s health.

35-year history

Metroplex Hospital has been serving patients for 35 years and is a 232-bed hospital, averaging about 65 patients a day.

The main hospital employs 1,200 people and is located on South Clear Creek Road between Killeen and Copperas Cove and is adjacent to Fort Hood.

As the hub of the Metroplex Health System, Metroplex is a modern, acute-care facility with high-end, state-of-the art equipment and technology.

The hospital recently combined its cardiac and vascular services under one program that offers procedures such as cardiac stent placement and aortic abdominal aneurism surgery.

Metroplex offers 24-hour emergency care, a cardiac-cath lab for diagnosing heart blockages and other heart-related problems, extensive on-site laboratory, X-ray imaging, ultrasound, mammography, cardio-pulmonary care, a comprehensive maternity program and birthing center, cardiac rehabilitation programs, as well as monthly community health screenings and classes.

The next Vision XXI class is April 4 with an emphasis on education resources throughout the area.
