Young people interested in writing and illustrating their own books can get words of wisdom and helpful hints at the Pencil Productions: Young Authors and Illustrators Conferences from 9 a.m. to noon Feb. 9 at the Harker Heights Public Library.

“It’s an opportunity to learn about many different things in the writing and illustrating world,” said Lisa Reyes, reference librarian.

The conference, hosted by the library, is for children in first through sixth grades and is patterned after a program formerly sponsored by the Bell County Reader’s Council, Reyes said.

“It’s something we started back up … it’s such a great program and we thought we’d reinstate it,” she said.

Two published authors will be featured at the conference, Melanie Chrismer of Houston and Jazmine Swanson, a local resident and college student. Chrismer writes and illustrates children’s books and Swanson writes and illustrates fantasy books for teens and young adults.

“We’re also going to have several different writing and illustrating classes,” Reyes said.

Workshops will be available on topics like self-publishing, illustrating and comic books, mysteries, poetry, humor and fantasy, myths and fairy tales. Cost of the conference is $10 per child. For more information, call (254) 953-5491.
