HARKER HEIGHTS — Sam’s Club is officially open for business.

During the new store’s soft opening Wednesday evening, officials distributed 15 grants totaling $25,000 from the Sam’s Club Giving Program to various local schools, businesses and organizations.

“We have a long lasting commitment to give back to our community,” said Joe Tovi, club manager. “In 2012, Sam’s Club gave away $106 million in cash and in-kind gifts. Giving back is the right thing to do and we strive to serve the community in the best way possible, especially our servicemen and women.”

In addition to these grants, Sam’s Club sponsored the USO Gala, Central Texas Food, Wine & Brew Festival, Picnic in the Park, Killeen Flavors and Warrant Officer Week on Fort Hood.

The Heights Sam’s Club, which specializes in bulk goods at discount prices, has hired 190 employees, 60 of whom are veterans.

The aisles were stocked and pallets were piled high in anticipation for opening day today. Additional lines for new members to sign up at the members-only store were added to keep up with demand, and to avoid congestion for current members when the doors open at 8:30 a.m.

“We are happy to be here and we are 100 percent ready,” Tovi said. “The community has welcomed us with open arms and we are ready to serve them and show them how to save.”
