After two weeks of practicing against itself, Harker Heights’ football team finally gets to face a true opponent.
The Knights are set to host Round Rock Stony Point in a scrimmage today at 6:30 p.m. at Leo Buckley Stadium, and it serves as the final tune-up prior to next week’s season opener.
Harker Heights embarks toward a second consecutive playoff appearance next Friday, traveling to Elgin for a 7:30 p.m. start.
The Knights produced an overall record of 7-5 last year, ending a three-year postseason drought.
Harker Heights’ first home game is scheduled for Sept. 7 against Round Rock McNeil.
In their first official meet of the season, the Knights emerged from the Temple Invitational with a sixth-place finish in the Class 5A-6A division.
Led by Ronald Ramthum, who placed 15 th overall with a time of 17 minutes, 30 seconds along the three-mile course at Lions Park, the Knights produced a final score of 165 points.
Luke Lawhorn (17:47.1) and Ryan Mittag (17:52.7) followed for Harker Heights, finishing within six seconds of each other and placing 21st and 23rd, respectively. Ethan Thomas (28th, 18:11.2) and D’Mitir Fraiser (78th, 20:32.2) rounded out the Knights’ scoring.
Stony Point won the team championship with 26 points, producing the top two individual finishers. The Knights’ District 8-6A rival Ellison placed second with 103 points, and A&M Consolidated was third (109).
Also from District 8-6A, Waco Midway (174) and Copperas Cove (303) placed seventh and 12th , respectively.
The Lady Knights finished 10th as a team, scoring 198 points.
Julia Arey delivered Harker Heights’ top individual showing, placing 31st with a time of 22:50.5. Additionally, teammates Aleya Johnson-Rudino (35th , 23:08.4), Kelsie Terry (37th , 23:27.0) and Grace Wallace (39th, 23:31.6) each finished in the top 40.
Raquel Hatton (56th, 24:35.3) completed the Lady Knights’ scoring.
J’Vanae Deshone (60th, 24:43.1) and Elaina Marks (62nd, 24:54.0) also ran for Harker Heights, but their scores did not count toward the team total.
Midway claimed the team title with 85 points, while A&M Consolidated (91) and Austin Anderson (116) followed in the standings.
Additionally, Ellison was fifth and Copperas Cove placed eighth with 138 and 168 points, respectively.
The Knights and Lady Knights compete at the Belton Invitational today and will travel for the Pro-Fit Invitational on Sept. 1.
Harker Heights is set to play two matches this week.
The Knights and Lady Knights will host Ellison in district competition Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.
Harker Heights won its district opener against Copperas Cove 11-8 behind an unblemished showing from the Lady Knights, who won all six of their singles matches and all three of their doubles matches.
On Friday, Harker Heights travels to play Del Valle at 4:30 p.m.
