For the eighth consecutive year, Harker Heights qualified a male for the state track and field meet.

The Knights sent four boys to this year’s Class 6A competition at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin, as A.J. Pemberton, Shamel Allwood, Adrese Atkins and Mikel Stone will compete in the 800-meter relay today and Saturday.

Pemberton, Allwood, Atkins and Stone captured silver in the event at the Region I-6A meet held on April 28-29 at Maverick Stadium in Arlington. The quartet registered a time of 1 minute, 26.84 seconds.

Mansfield won the 4x200 relay in 1:26.55.

The top two qualifiers in each event at regionals earned a spot at state.

John Dulaney, Harker Heights head boys coach, said Pemberton has been a difference maker as the unit’s first leg.

“In the 100 dash, he’s our fastest kid,” Dulaney said. “He clocked a 10.54 in the prelims at regionals. He was also on our sprint relay, and we normally have broken stagger on the rest of the field by the time he hands off.

“That’s just a really nice place to be.”

Pemberton hands off to Allwood, who transfers the baton to Atkins for the third.

“There’s not a weak leg on our relay,” Dulaney said. “We get a really good middle of our really out of Shamel and Adrese Atkins, and we anchor it with Mikel Stone, who had posted our fastest 200 time this year.”

Stone has had some hip trouble this year, but Dulaney and company hope the layoff between the regional and state meets will benefit their anchor.

“We’ve tried to give him some treatment and some rest,” Dulaney said, “and we’re hoping, going into the state meet, that we’re healthier than we’ve been since the district meet.

“These kids ran a 1:25.26 at the area meet, and I still feel like we can go lower than that.”
