HARKER HEIGHTS — Carlie Tuiasosopo tried to keep the promise she made to her coach, but by the end of the match it didn’t matter.

The Copperas Cove senior told Lady Dawgs head coach Cari Lowery that she’d deliver 20 kills for her team Friday against the Harker Heights Lady Knights volleyball team.

Tuiasosopo didn’t get 20, but she didn’t have to.

“I can say a million good things about Carlie Tuiasosopo,” said Lowery. “She is smart, works hard every day and is extremely coachable — she deserved to have this game today.”

The senior outside-hitter led all players with 16 kills while adding seven blocks, and Cove beat 20th-ranked Heights 17-25, 25-16, 25-15, 25-6.

“I promised my coach I’d get 20 kills, so I tried to shoot for that,” said Tuiasosopo. “I don’t know if I did, but I really tried. But really I just want to help my team whenever I’m on the floor.”

She did.

The Cove senior routinely came up with big kills to keep the momentum on the Lady Dawgs’ side for most of the night.

“The top two teams in district played, and we did well in the first game, but our passing went to crap the second game and that’s kind of how it works,” said Heights head coach Chris Wiley.

After splitting the first two games, both teams started the third by trading points until the score was tied at 13. Then Cove (26-6, 5-0 8-5A) reeled off a 10-1 run that put the Lady Dawgs on top 23-14.

During the streak, Tuiasosopo got four kills while Bryaunea Hall added two of her seven blocks. Arielle Garcia and Jessica Vick served six times each for Cove, with Vick ending the run with an ace.

“In Game 1 we had too many unforced errors, but in Games 2, 3 and 4 we controlled the game pretty well,” Lowery said. “I think we played tentatively early, as if we didn’t warm up too well.”

They were certainly warmed up by the fourth game.

Game 4 was the least competitive, as Cove jumped all over the Lady Knights (28-4, 4-1) and led 18-2 before a Heights timeout ended the run.

Katie Schulte had 26 assists for Heights while Anjane Janda and Deysia Burden had eight and seven kills, respectively.
