If you know, feel free to give me a heads up.
Because looking at the records heading into the start of District 8-5A play, I have a hard time believing anyone truly knows what will happen when league play begins today.
Shoemaker seems poised for a vast improvement upon last season, and Waco Midway and Copperas Cove ought to be the class of the district until someone says otherwise.
I can easily see a repeat of last year with a dogfight for the final playoff spot(s).
If I’ve learned anything covering one district the last two seasons it is that nondistrict records mean absolutely nothing.
It didn’t take a lot of research to find that rule applies in this district as well, after a winless Harker Heights team stunned undefeated Belton with a 7-0 victory in the teams’ district opener last season.
But what makes this year even more interesting is that Heights, again 0-3 entering the matchup, isn’t the only team searching for its first win.
This year, Heights and Belton will be a matchup of winless teams while Killeen, a playoff team from a year ago, and Ellison also enter league play 0-3.
Killeen and Heights reached the postseason last year — the Roos, of course, were unbeaten in non-district play — but will they be able to rebound and reach for a second consecutive year?
Even more intriguing, can Shoemaker, or anyone else for that matter, intervene so the district title isn’t played for Oct. 11 when Copperas Cove visits Waco Midway?
Will anyone beat Midway is a fair question itself considering no one was able to last season.
I certainly don’t have any of the answers, or even a premonition for that matter.
Instead, I’ll just look forward to 7:30 p.m. today when we’ll finally start getting answers on the field.
