Sport: Track and field
Claim to fame: Adkins is the defending 100-meter dash district champion after blazing to gold with a time of 12.03 at the District 12-5A championships last April. Last weekend, Adkins won the 100 with a season-best time of 12.44 seconds and was a member of the gold-medal winning 400- and 800-meter relays as the Lady Knights won the Kangaroo Relays for their second straight track meet title.
You’ve won back-to-back meet team titles, what’s the key to Heights’ success so far this season?
Our team this year is a lot closer than we’ve been and I feel like this is probably the best team we’ve had in awhile. Everyone’s really talented and we really want it this year.
You’ve been running on varsity since your freshman season along with Arkansas-bound sprinter Aliayah McDonald, what’s it like being one of the team’s “grizzled veterans”?
It’s not really like anything. We’re just chill and not as mean as all the other seniors have been. We just want to help. I just want to make them as good as I was, ... I just want to be that senior that (others say), ‘Oh, she really helped me.’ Because when I was a sophomore or a junior, no one ever took the time out to say, ‘Well, this will help you along your way.’ And I want to do that for the next (class of Lady Knights).
Personality-wise, what do you bring to the team?
I feel like I’m a leader. And I can be serious and (the other runners) know whenever it’s time to work, it’s time to work. And whenever we play, ... (or) joke, they know it’s OK to joke and whenever they see us kid around with coach (Michelle) Womack, they know it’s OK. We work hard but we also have fun with it.
What kind of kidding are we talking about?
We dance a lot, (laughs) and we sing, just normal stuff you’d do at home in front of the mirror. Just singing and dancing, and we do that out (on the track), and coach Womack dances with us. She’s probably going to kill me for saying this, but she did the Tootsie Roll not too long ago at practice.
Can she pull off the Tootsie Roll?
Yeah, she did it pretty well (laughs).
What do you do when you’re not in school or on the track?
I shop a lot. I’m a really big shopper. I hang out with friends, and I work.
What’s your biggest shopping vice?
Shoes, shoes, shoes. I have about 120 (pairs). I work at a shoe store, so shoes are kind of my thing.
