The Knights are on the verge of open two-a-days in preparation for the upcoming football season.

After reaching the playoffs for the first time since 2012 last year, Harker Heights will officially begin its quest for consecutive postseason appearances Monday.

While some schools began practice last week, the University Interscholastic League requires Class 6A programs that took part in spring training, like Harker Heights, to wait an extra week before the opening day of conditioning. The Knights cannot practice with pads or have contact until Aug. 18.

The Knights will typically practice twice a day for the next two weeks with a morning session on the field and an afternoon session in the weight room. On Aug. 19, they will have an intrasquad scrimmage.

Harker Heights will also scrimmage Round Rock Stony Point at home on Aug. 25. One week later, the Knights play their season opener at Elgin, and District 8-6A competition begins Sept. 28 against Belton.

Harker Heights ended a three-year postseason drought last year, going 7-5 overall, including a 3-3 showing in district, before falling to eventual state-quarterfinalist Duncanville 24-7 in the opening round of the playoffs.

After weeks of training in the heat, the Knights and Lady Knights open their seasons today at the Ellison Tri Meet.

Along with the host teams, Waco Midway will also compete at the meet, which is scheduled to start at 8 a.m. at Temple Lake Park.

Including the opener, the Knights and Lady Knights have races in seven consecutive weeks to start the season.

Beginning Aug. 18, Harker Heights will take part in the Temple Invitational, Belton Invitational and Pro-Fit Invitational before traveling for meets at Midway, Cleburne and Salado.

Following a week off, the squads close the regular season at the Lampasas Invitational. The meet marks the final competition before district on Oct. 11 at Waco.

Should any of the Knights or Lady Knights advance to regionals, they would compete on Oct. 23 in Lubbock.

The state meet is set for Nov. 4.

Harker Heights takes to the courts today for the first time this season, hosting two days of tournament action to kick things off.

The Knights and the Lady Knights remain at home throughout the remainder of the month, playing matches against Copperas Cove (Tuesday), Temple (Aug. 24) and Ellison (Aug. 29) before traveling to Del Valle on Sept. 1 for their road opener.

District competition concludes Oct. 10 against Shoemaker with postseason play beginning Oct. 16.

The state tournament opens Nov. 1.

All four Killeen ISD head football coaches, including Harker Heights head coach Jerry Edwards, will take part in a public meet and greet prior to the season beginning.

The coaches will gather at the Shilo Inn Suites Hotel on Aug. 23 from noon to 1 p.m.
