Harker Heights quarterback Troy Smith got his chance to leave an impression with national scouts when he competed at the Elite 11 regional camp at Ohio State University this past week.
Smith had competed at the Dallas Nike Football SPARQ Combine on May 3 at AT&T Stadium before attending the Elite 11 regional camp held the next day at the same site.
Without an invite, Smith was allowed to compete as a wide receiver before, ultimately, earning an invite to the regional camp in Columbus, Ohio, this past Monday.
Harker Heights head coach Jerry Edwards, for one, wasn’t surprised to find out that his do-everything quarterback had managed to go from walkup to camp invite in the same afternoon.
“Not at all,” Edwards said. “That doesn’t surprise me one bit. Like I said before, he’s one of the best dual-threat quarterbacks that I’ve ever been around, that I’ve ever seen.
“He’s only getting better.”
Smith will return to lead the Heights offense in the fall as the Knights look to rebound from a 2-8 campaign in 2013 and return to the playoffs.
