Speech therapy business celebrates second anniversary

On a hot August day, a young boy named Timmy and his mother approached Who’s Talking Now, a Killeen speech therapy office, pausing before the glass front doors and then stepping out of sight.

The mother spoke quietly to her son. A moment later, the pair walked into the office.

More than 150 Harker Heights residents and many more shoppers braved 100-degree temperatures Saturday as they took advantage of the third annual City Wide Garage Sale.

The city waived its garage sale permit fees for the day to encourage residents to open their garages and put price tags on their priceless and not-so-precious excess items. A 1918 Victorian couch, art pieces and baby gear were some of the merchandise available, said Harker Heights Activities Coordinator Heather Cox.

Jack Harris’ last wish was to die peacefully at home in the presence of his family.

He got his wish on Aug. 1 when, surrounded by his mother- and father-in-law, siblings, friends, his children and his wife, he lost his battle with cancer at the age of 38.

Fire department talks about wildfires

With more houses being built on the rural outskirts of the city, the Harker Heights Fire Department wants people to be aware of how they can keep their homes safe from fire.

On Saturday, the fire department and Texas A&M Forest Science held a wildfire awareness event at Harker Heights Community Park to give residents tips on wildfire prevention.
