Copperas Cove and Waco Midway ran away from the rest of District 8-5A this past volleyball season.

And when it came to the District 8-5A All-District team, the two powerhouses ran away with the annual honors, nearly sweeping the superlative honors.

“They’ve been successful for many years, so we’re always honored to share with a program like Midway,” Cove coach Cari Lowery said. “I’m proud of the girls, they worked hard.”

Cove and Midway took all but one superlative, with the lone outside winner being Ellison junior Bri’anna Gray as Blocker of the Year.

“It’s always a good feeling (to win a superlative) when you have so many athletes in our district,” Ellison coach William De Gracia said of Gray. “For her to get that as a junior is good.”

Cove, the district champion after defeating Midway in a playoff tiebreaker match, had four superlatives, with Lowery taking Coach of the Year for the second year in a row and senior Qiana Canete repeating as MVP.

After winning Newcomer of the Year as a sophomore, Canete finished her Lady Bulldawg career having won a superlative honor in each of her varsity seasons.

“If I talked for an hour, I couldn’t say enough good things about (Canete),” Lowery said. “She has been hands down one of the most fun athletes to coach, one of the most pleasurable athletes to coach.”

Fellow Cove senior Bryaunea Hall was Co-Hitter of the Year, along with junior Allison Jones from Midway, while Cove junior Lexi Perez earned Defender of the Year honors in her first varsity season.

Midway took the rest of the superlative honors with Christy Carruth winning Setter of the Year and freshman Alley Beth Deason winning Newcomer of the Year. Including superlatives, Midway had six first-team players, the most of any school, while Cove had five.

Cove had a pair of juniors, Mikayla Blount and Katy Ranes, make the first team while Ellison — which ended a six-year playoff hiatus — had a trio of juniors, Asia Howard, Miranda Tapia and Amanda Glover, make the first team.

Killeen setter Madison Sapp was the only sophomore on the first team and was joined by Lady Roo teammate Chalon Anderson on the first team as well.

Shoemaker had a pair of seniors, Anessa Pitts and Aria Price, make the first team while a trio of Belton seniors, Kinsey Williams, Monica Gonzalez and Bri Brown, also made the first team.

Senior Kathleeen Janda was the lone Harker Heights representative on the first team.

Including superlatives, there were 25 players on the first team.

And despite seeing both seeing program mainstays graduate this season, Lowery and De Gracia both couldn’t contain their excitement for the future of their programs, which were also well-represented on the 8-5A All-District team.

“I wanted to give my girls two weeks off, but I think we’re going to start Wednesday,” De Gracia said. “We’re going to be pretty competitive next year, moreso than this year.”

Added Lowery: “That’s why you get up and coach every day.”
