Killeen rocked Stony Point for season highs of 521 total yards and 21 first downs, but 13 penalties backpedaled the team 133 yards, and the Roos (0-3) watched their three-quarter lead slip away.

Driving in opposing territory with an 18-14 lead and less than two minutes remaining in the first half, Killeen had a chance to tighten its stranglehold on the Tigers (3-1).

A deep sack on a Round Rock Stony Point fourth-and-10 had previously given the Roos great field position at their own 43.

Daniel McCants’ 4-yard run and first-down passes from Garrett Gaskamp to Dominic Dungca and Keondre Parker brought the Roos to Stony Point’s 26.

But momentum shifted when a holding call negated the subsequent 26-yard touchdown pass.

The Roos couldn’t overcome first-and-20, then a sack caused third-and-30, and Killeen punted during the half’s closing seconds.

“We’re going to look at film to see what we’re doing wrong and see if we can change it,” Killeen coach Sam Jones said. “We got to fix it. The good thing about it is we got another week to get ready for another opponent, and we’ll try to fix all the mistakes ... and make sure we don’t make them again next week.”

Killeen had another chance to bury Stony Point when it regained possession up 25-14 with 2:28 seconds remaining in the third quarter.

Killeen marched 39 yards to the Tigers’ 44 after a Gaskamp-to-Parker connection, and runs from McCants, Dungca and Dijiron Lilley. Two straight penalties — another hold and an offensive facemask — pushed Killeen back to its own territory as the fourth quarter started.

A personal foul on the ensuing point set up Stony Point on Killeen’s 48.

The Tigers methodically managed seven runs and three passes in 4:52, a drive that ended on a 7-yard touchdown pass from Damian Lindley to Jeremy Carr. Stony Point had its first lead, 26-25, with 6:15 remaining in the game.

“We still have a long way to go, overall, as a team,” Jones said. “We just happened to be on the short end of the stick. Hopefully, we can get it fixed by next week and get it rolling by district time.”

Belton looking to repeat history

Belton (0-3) enters district play winless for the first time since 2010, but the Tigers may actually feel encouraged by that piece of history.

Belton followed up its winless nondistrict campaign that year by ripping off five consecutive wins, including victories against current district mates Harker Heights, Shoemaker, Temple and Ellison.

The Tigers finished 5-1 in league play — with the only loss coming to A&M Consolidated in the season finale — and qualified for the playoffs for the second season in a row.

What is worth noting, however, is that two of the Tigers’ nondistrict losses that season came against current district foes Waco Midway and Copperas Cove.

Belton certainly has its work cut out for it, coming off its worst defeat of the season in a 44-15 loss to Round Rock, its sixth straight on the road.

The Tigers surrendered 325 yards on the ground against the Dragons and were flagged for 141 yards.

The offense was unusually stagnant against the Dragons — failing to have a 100-yard rusher for the first time this season — but will look to get back to its high-scoring ways against Harker Heights on Friday.
