Late in the season and in the playoffs, teams often count on their some of their best players to play their best.

This season, Patrick Mark, Montre’ Williams, Kase Spears, Shonderius Howard and Eric Nichols took their game to the next level and helped their respective teams make the playoffs.

For their efforts, the quintet earned a place on the Killeen Daily Herald’s 2013-14 All-Area Second Team.

Mark was a Grey Wolves starter, but accepted a new role coming off the bench to make the team better. The move paid off as Shoemaker won 11 consecutive District 8-5A games after starting 0-2 and finished second in the district.

He saved his best performance for the playoffs. Mark scored 15 points and helped the Grey Wolves overcome a 16-point deficit in the third quarter to help force overtime in a 64-61 loss to then-No. 5 South Grand Prairie.

The senior guard made a key 3-pointer and took a big charge in the fourth quarter, then scored the final points of Shoemaker’s season in overtime. Mark was an all-district first-team selection.

Williams helped the Dawgs get to the playoffs and beat Killeen in a third-place tiebreaker.

Williams was Cove’s lone first-team all-district selection and took his game to the next level by leading all scorers with 26 points in a bi-district playoff loss to Duncanville.

Spears was named the co-MVP of District 13-2A after helping the Eagles to a 30-4 record, including a 14-0 district mark. Salado was ranked as high as 17th in the state and made it to the Region II-2A quarterfinals.

The 5-foot-10 senior’s best performance came in an area playoff win against Hempstead. Spears scored only four points, but stayed in the game despite sustaining an injury to his ribs early in the second half.

Howard helped the Lampasas Badgers finish fourth in District 8-3A and end a 12-year playoff drought.

Howard finished the season as Lampasas’ leading scorer, was an all-district first-team selection and scored a team-high 15 points to help Lampasas beat Gatesville 47-45 in overtime to put the Badgers in the playoffs.

Nichols led the Hornets to a 20-7 overall record by scoring 16.2 points per game to go with 8.5 rebounds, 3.8 steals and 2.7 assists.

Nichols was the District 28-1A, Division II MVP and helped the Hornets make a playoff appearance.
