CORSICANA – For the most part, the Copperas Cove defense held its ground.
But, with little offensive possession the Lady Dawgs couldn't overcome the powerful leg of Longview's Molly Grisham.
Grisham scored two goals to lead the Lady Lobos to a 2-0 win over Copperas Cove in the Region II-5A bi-district playoffs Tuesday at Tiger Stadium in Corsicana.
"I thought (the defense) played outside themselves – spectacular really," said Cove coach Hagen Streckel. "We had to cover up. They were doing their shifting and the entire defense had to shift over one man. Then on the cross we had to move back and we did a real good job of communicating today."
With Longview's attacks in the box failing, the Lady Lobos decided to go long.
That's when Grisham hit a shot from 35 yards out to put the Lady Lobos up 1-0 in the 17th minute.
"We just didn't mark up on their girl and she got the free shot," Streckel said.
In the second half, Grisham gave Longview and insurance goal when she skidded a shot past Cove goalkeeper Kaitlyn Barrick.
Cove dominated the final 12 minutes of the game as it began to press for goals, but its two best opportunities to score came in the first half.
Shelbie Letzer hit a hard strike that was deflected by the Longview sweeper 15 minutes into the game.
Then with less than 10 minutes remaining Jessica Vick had a clear shot at the goal, but sent the shot straight into the Longview goalkeeper Kathryn VanMeter's hands.
"We just couldn't get a handle on the ball," Streckel said. "That was the frustrating part. They are a very skilled team.
"Some of our long balls were working, but we just couldn't maintain possession."
