TEMPLE — Zach Allen threw for five touchdowns and ran for three to lead Temple to a 69-37 rout of Shoemaker on Friday at Wildcat Stadium.

Allen, who’s committed to Syracuse, threw for 271 yards and ran for 104 to lead the Wildcats (3-1, 1-0 8-5A) to a district-opening win over the upset-minded Grey Wolves.

Shoemaker running back Johnny Jefferson, who had back-to-back 300-yard rushing games in the Grey Wolves’ last two nondistrict games, was limited to 59 yards and two touchdowns on just 15 carries.

Instead, Shoemaker (1-3, 0-1) relied on the arm of Tequan Felder.

Felder completed 18 of 21 passes for 202 yards and ran for a 39 yards and a touchdown.

Gaylon Sanders, the district’s leading returning rusher from last season, broke out for 104 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries for the Wildcats.

Jefferson scored on runs of 1 and 14 yards that gave Shoemaker a 13-12 lead in the first quarter, but behind Allen, who completed 12 of 18 passes, the Wildcats pulled away with three unanswered scores that spanned the first and second quarter.

Allen completed a 56-yard scoring pass to Jeremy Hemphill that gave Temple the lead. Then, he threw a 30-yard touchdown to Kaelan Nealy and ran for a 17-yard score that made it 34-13 Temple.

Ziere Banner scored on a 1-yard run and caught a 2-point conversion pass from Jefferson to pull the Grey Wolves to within 34-21, but Allen’s 5-yard touchdown run gave the Wildcats a 41-21 lead at halftime.

In the third quarter, Allen threw touchdown passes of 40 and 24 yards to Erick Arizmendi and Keith Buhl sprinted 81 yards for a rushing touchdown for a 62-23 lead going into the fourth.

Using three quarterbacks, the Grey Wolves actually outgained Temple 284-271 through the air, but Temple ran for 338 yards, 24 more than Jefferson had by himself in the Grey Wolves’ last-minute loss to Round Rock Stony Point before the bye week.

Qwoy Blunt caught 10 passes for 140 yards and a touchdown, a 6-yarder from Banner for the game’s final score, and Javonte Warren had seven catches for 72 yards.

Arizmendi caught three passes for 79 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Temple receivers.
