Both the girls and boys teams of Belton High School captured the 2014 District 12-5A Swimming Championship on Saturday night in Belton.

The Lady Tigers were especially dominant, tallying 216 total points. Temple finished second with 104 points and Killeen was third with 71.

Belton’s boys team captured its crown with 145.5 total points, Waco Midway was second with 127 and Harker Heights third with 103.

“I knew our girls were solid coming into this season,” said Belton head coach Mike Burt. “But to beat everybody else in this meet by over 100 points was a phenomenal performance.

“As for our guys, I truly believed Midway was the team to beat. But we pulled it together. We did some things tonight that, back in September, maybe we didn’t think we’d ever be able to do. So, overall, for both our girls and boys teams to win feels really good.”

The performance of the Harker Heights’ swimmers surprised Burt.

“I really think it’s important that people understand just how phenomenal some of Heights’ performances were,” Burt said. “They did a lot of things that they should be proud of. They pushed everyone here. They knocked Midway down some and, of course, they knocked us down some, too. Harker Heights earned everybody’s respect tonight.”
