For the young Belton Lady Tigers first golf team, the District 8-5A Golf Tournament was a learning experience. But judging by the scores, Belton will show their claws for years to come.
The Lady Tiger sophomore quintet of Madison Smith, Allison Peterka, Ryan Dobos, Morgan Thomasson and Taryn Cook finished second at the two-day tournament which concluded on Thursday at the Stonetree Golf Course.
“I think by the time they’re juniors and sophomores, they’re pretty much going to dominate,” said Belton head girls golf coach Lauren Marx.
The district team title is decided by the sum of the top four of five individual scores over the last two days. The top two teams advance to the regional tournament as well as the top two individuals not on those teams.
The Lady Tigers shot a team score of 744 and finished 16 strokes behind Waco Midway’s top team for the district title.
Copperas Cove’s No. 1 team shot 787, Belton’s second team finished fourth at 873 and Midway’s second team shot 924.
Lady Bulldawg Tyler Morrison will be advancing to regionals as a medalist after posting a two-day score of 169 and will be joined by Temple’s McKenna Ralston, who shot a 160.
Belton shot a first-day total of 371 and led Midway by two strokes, but the second day was hurtful. The Lady Tigers shot 373 while Midway shaved 18 strokes off its second-day total.
“Midway’s always been our challenge,” Marx said.
“Earlier this season they were beating us by 30 strokes and they beat us by only 16 strokes in district. Obviously, we’re on their heels and getting better.”
Smith had the best individual tournament of any player finishing with a score of 167.
“She pretty much lives on the golf course and from her freshman year to this year, she’s improved by 15, 20 strokes,” Marx said about Smith.
“She’s very dedicated to golf, she wants to do well, she wants to do well for the team and it’s obvious to everyone that knows her and sees her play that golf is her life.”
Killeen’s Deja Pulido had a strong tournament with a score of 173, four shots short of advancing.
The Region I-5A Golf Tournament is April 14-17 at Rawls Golf Course in Lubbock.
The boys tournament is on April 14 -15 while the girls follow on April 16-17.
Marx said the goal is to shoot a team score of 350.
