The Belton Tigers proved to be the alpha cats of District 8-5A for a second straight season in 2014.
As a result of a 13-1 district record and their play on the field, pitcher Tanner Frick, second baseman Chase Cryer and shortstop Walker Winders were selected to the Killeen Daily Herald’s All-Area First Team.
The Tigers have three first-teamers, the most of any area team. Salado and Copperas Cove have two players on the team while Harker Heights, Shoemaker and Gatesville each have one on the All-Area First-Team.
The Tigers finished with a 23-10-1 overall record, won the district title and made it to the Region I-5A bi-district playoffs for the second consecutive year.
Cryer, a senior second baseman, hit .429 with 26 RBIs, two home runs and nine extra-base hits. He was one of eight Tigers to make the all-district first-team.
Frick, a left-handed sophomore, had a team-best 0.60 ERA and led the Tigers pitching staff with 70 strikeouts. He posted a 5-2 record and was a first-team All-District 8-5A selection.
Winders, a senior shortstop, hit .373 with 24 RBIs and had 16 extra-base hits. He played in 34 games and was also an all-district first-team selection.
The Salado senior duo of Cole Haag and Britton Hawes earned KDH All-Area First-Team honors after helping the Eagles finish second in District 22-2A and make it to the Region III-2A final for the second consecutive year.
Haag hit .363 with 26 RBIs and had 11 extra-base hits. The catcher also had a .996 fielding percentage and was an all-district first-team selection.
Hawes, a pitcher, compiled a 0.39 ERA with 72 strikeouts and posted a 10-2 record. He was a first-team all-district selection and had a .925 fielding percentage in district play.
Tim Bechtold and Kyle Winstead were First-Team All-Area honorees after playing big roles for the Copperas Cove Bulldawgs this season.
Bechtold, a sophomore outfielder, had a team-high 29 hits, 26 runs scored and eight doubles. Bechtold was an All-District 8-5A second-team selection.
Winstead, a senior infielder, led the team with .387 average and was the team’s co-leader with 29 hits. The all-district honorable mention honoree scored 24 runs, had 15 RBIs and was named the Bulldawgs’ MVP at the team’s annual baseball banquet.
After helping Harker Heights make it to the Region I-5A playoffs, shortstop Caleb Dean was an All-Area First-Team selection. Dean hit .375 with 23 RBIs and was an All-District 8-5A first-team selection as a senior.
Gatesville shortstop and leadoff hitter Seth Martin hit .354 and had an on-base percentage of .448 to make the All-Area First-Team. Martin helped the Hornets make it into the Region I-3A playoffs by scoring 29 runs and stealing 18 bases. Shoemaker’s Raven Sauceda was an All-Area First-Team selection after hitting .408 with nine RBIs, 24 runs scored, 14 extra base hits and 16 stolen bases. The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi commit was primarily a shortstop, but played catcher and pitched and was an all-district first-team selection as a utility player.
