The final round of the District 8-5A boys golf tournament at Stonetree Golf Club made for an interesting comparison of performances and emotions — from the same school.

For Belton, there was the thrill of its No. 1 squad winning the district championship by a staggering 51 strokes and having the top four players in the individual standings, paced by champion Andrew Paysse and his 3-under-par 69 in the final round. Meanwhile, the Tigers’ No. 2 team struggled in the final round and being overtaken by Waco Midway’s No. 1 squad for the second and final berth in next week’s Class 5A Region I Tournament in Lubbock.

Belton No. 1 shot a 4-over-par 292 total Monday to build a 24-stroke lead over its No. 2 team, with Midway No. 1 three shots back in third. Playing in stronger wind Tuesday, the Tigers’ top team — led by top-four finishers Paysse, Nick Ratliff, Zach Plunk and Kyle Revis — kept pulling away and posted a 296 for a 12-over 588 total. Copperas Cove’s Drew Dewald and Harker Heights’ Logan Fox qualified as medalists with scores of 154 and 155.
