Leading 28-23 at halftime, the Killeen Lady Kangeroos had a spectacular third quarter — outscoring Harker Heights 22-4 — and then cruised to a 56-40 district victory.

“I think our defense was the key to that third quarter,” said Killeen senior forward Ceida Williams.

Killeen alternated its coverage, employing both a 1-2-2 and 1-3-1 defense.

“We just kept hustling on defense,” said Killeen sophomore forward Keaunna Johnson.

“In that third quarter, we slowed things down and ran our plays right,” said Lady Roos freshman forward Shianne Johnson.

“Our offense was so effective in that third quarter because of our defense,” said Lady Roos sophomore point guard Tia Harston. “Defense was the key — everyone stayed in position.”

Harston had a near-flawless third quarter, dishing five assists in that critical third frame.

“We had a lot of easy baskets but we couldn’t have scored all those close-range baskets without those good passes from Tia,” said Shianne Johnson.

Harston, Killeen’s best outside shooter, ended up with five points and a game-high seven assists.

“I didn’t take that many shots tonight because my teammates kept getting open,” said Harston. “My teammates slashed to the hoop really well.”

Williams had five boards in the first quarter alone, and ended with a game-high 10. She also scored eight points in the contest.

“I was really hyped right from the start,” said Williams. “I really wanted to beat Heights tonight.”

Up 50-27 heading into the fourth quarter, Killeen was never threatened again.

The win upped Killeen’s district record to 5-4 (15-12 overall). Heights fell to 6-3 (16-7).

Alexus Dukes led the Lady Knights in scoring with 15 points and teammate Angela DeLaney had nine.

“We had lost to Heights earlier in the season so we felt we had to get them back tonight,” said Harston.

Shianne Johnson had a team-high 15 points and six rebounds. Keaunna Johnson scored 14 points and grabbed nine boards. Also for Killeen, Raven Ringo grabbed five boards and scored three points, Carmen Williams scored five points and Lauren Watkins four.

“This win means a lot to us,” Harston said. Now we know we can beat a great team if we all play together — like we did tonight.”
