Representatives of the Killeen Police Department will host a softball tournament fundraiser at 8 a.m. Aug. 31 for injured KPD officer Juan Obregon Jr. and in memory of slain officer Robert “Bobby” Hornsby.
All proceeds will go to the Hornsby and Obregon families, as well as the KPD Law Enforcement Assistance Fund (LEAF).
Obregon, a 10-year KPD veteran, was shot in the leg by an assault rifle during a July 14 shootout that killed Hornsby, a four-year KPD veteran. Obregon was released from the hospital July 23 but still has a long road to recovery. Both were members of the KPD SWAT.
Obregon and Hornsby’s widow, Kimberly Hornsby, are expected to throw out the ceremonial first pitch, said tournament organizer and KPD SWAT officer Brandon Smith.
The softball tournament, which will play under Amateur Softball Association rules, is semi-coed and teams must have a minimum 10 players with at least two females playing at all times.
Teams must sign up and pay the $150 entry fee by 5 p.m. Aug. 26. Donations will be accepted at the Killeen Athletic Complex entrance gate Aug. 31, and there will be a raffle for several donated prizes with tickets for $5 a piece. The public is encouraged to attend.
