Lometa junior Tricia Williams won two gold medals in the shot put and discus and sophomore Mikkaila Barnet placed third in the high jump Friday at the UIL State Track & Field Championships at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin.

Williams defending her 1A state discus title with a throw of 131 feet, 7 inches to win the event and set the new conference record.

Lometa competed at the 1A-Division II level, which was added this year when the University Interscholastic League split Class 1A, the state’s small classification into two divisions.

Williams won the the shot put with a throw of 42-10 1/4 after placing third in the event last year as a sophomore.

Barnet, who had the best qualifying mark in the high jump going into her first-ever state track meet appearance, slipped on the track before her final attempt at 5-feet, 2-inches and settled for a bronze medal with a mark of 5-1.

Salado’s Alex Cooke placed fifth in the 2A boys 3,200-meter run. The senior led the first four laps, but dropped from the lead to the middle of the pack after falling behind at the beginning the fifth lap.

Cooke finished in 9 minutes, 39.75 seconds, more than 10 seconds behind winner Quinlin McGregor of Amarillo Highland Park. McGregor finished in 9:29.38.
