SALADO - Last season, the Salado volleyball team was rarely challenged in district play.

But after breezing to the District 25-3A championship a year ago, the Lady Eagles couldn't find a way to get over the hump late against Burnet, falling 22-25, 25-21, 25-17, 25-20 for its first-ever 25-3A loss Tuesday at home.

"That's mental more than anything, and typically speaking, we're pretty mentally tough," Salado coach Rachel Lee said. "But we also know that we're going to outwork a lot of people for our points, (but) they out-ball controlled for their points."

Using crisp passing and stout defense that frustrated Salado's strong front-line play outside of 6-foot-3 Salado senior Carling Urben, the Lady Bulldogs (16-12, 2-0) overcame 14 errors in a first- game loss and held off repeated Lady Eagles (20-8, 1-1) rallied to sweep the final three games.
