Shoemaker's Cion Hicks it this year's All-Area Track and Field star, Thursday, June 6, 2013 at Shoemaker High School.

Baylor freshman discus and shot put thrower Cion Hicks may have practiced in Killeen, but during her high school career, Austin might as well have been her second home.

Heading into the final state meet of her prep career didn’t come with anxiety or urgency.

“I was more relaxed for that senior state meet,” said the former Shoemaker standout. “I already committed to Baylor and I know what one of the biggest things high school athletes try to do is get a commitment and go to college. “That’s why the end results were what they were.”

Hicks concluded a stellar prep career in 2013 by winning Class 5A gold medals in discus and shot put in the spring.

Hicks was named the Daily Herald’s All-Area girls track athlete of the year after making it to the state meet for the third straight year.

Shoemaker track coach Kevin Ellison said Hicks’ work ethic was as important as her natural ability and she served as an example for younger athletes that hard work could lead to a shot to compete in college.

“Cion was what you would call a workaholic. She did multiple sports. She comes from a well-rounded family. Her dad’s a coach, her mother’s athletic, a very good woman.”

As a senior, she was counted on to do more than just compete. “We asked her to be a student-coach last year,” Ellison said. “She helped the younger girls out, and even some of the guys, with small, technical things. That would also bring in that extra focus for herself and keep her grounded.”

Hicks and the Baylor track team begin the indoor track season Jan. 17 at the Texas A&M Team Invitational in College Station.
