Starting pitcher Chris Burroughs struck out nine and allowed three hits for the Bulldawgs, but Hutto picked up runs in the first and second innings to give itself the cushion it needed for a 2-1 win Monday to open the season.

Cove led early, getting a Ty Johnson single to score Warren Neely. Johnson had one of the Dawgs' four hits, with Tyler Overocker finishing 2-for-3.

"The kids played really well," Cove head coach C.J. Wilk said. "Chris threw the ball well and we had opportunities."

Hutto tied the game in the bottom of the first inning, taking the lead in the second off a first-and-third play.

The Lady Bulldawgs dropped their final game at the Bryan-College Station Tournament, falling to Wharton 4-3 on Saturday after their seventh-inning rally fell just short.

Wharton led 4-0 going in to Cove's final at-bat. Ashley Hartwell had a two-out, 2-RBI single that scored Uriah Kilwein and Destiny Henderson. However, a baserunning error cut the rally short.

Cove dropped two games last Friday, losing to Kennedale 5-1, scoring its lone run off an RBI single by Henderson. The Lady Dawgs then lost to Austin High 4-0. Justin Hartwell was 2-for-3 at the plate for Cove.

On Feb. 17 - the tournament's opening day - the Lady Dawgs lost to state-ranked Houston Bellaire 8-0 in their opening play-in game before losing a pitchers' duel 2-0 to Huntington.

Against No. 6 Bellaire, a bad defensive inning late in the game allowed the Cardinals to stretch out their lead. Ashley Hartwell tossed a two-hitter against Huntington, striking out four and walking two.
