COLLEGE STATION — Copperas Cove defeated Harker Heights 60-51 on Saturday to take third place in the McDonalds All-Star Invitational.

Mikayla Blount led Cove with 23 points and 16 rebounds and teammate

Xylina Carlisle scored 12 points.

Cove led 26-8 at halftime and fought off a second-half Heights rally which had, at one time, cut the deficit down to eight.

“We were on fire early and then they were on fire later—they caught the wave we were on,” said Cove head coach Eldridge McAdams. “Overall, for us, it was a good tournament; anytime you can win 4 of 5 makes it a good tourney.”

Leading Heights in scoring against Cove was Angela DeLaney with 22 points.

“We came out slow today,” said Heights head coach Shirretha Nelson. “We did have a great second half. Cove dominated the first half and we just came out really flat. We played much better in the second half and I’m glad we fought back.”

SALADO WINS THORNDALE SHOOTOUT: At Thorndale, the Salado Lady Eagles won the Thorndale Shootout championship by defeating Schulenburg 54-47.

Salado trailed 24-23 at halftime but led 41-34 at the end of the third quarter.

“It was our defense which helped us so much in that third quarter,” said Salado head coach Diane Konarik. “We were behind by two points and then went on an 8-0 run by using a full-court scramble defense.”

For Salado, Jaylee Sebek scored 15 points and grabbed nine rebounds, Taylor Atwood scored nine points and had nine boards, Ashley Adams scored 13 points and Taryn Kornegay had nine.

Sebek, Adams and Kornegay earned first-team all-tournament honors.

LADY ROOS WIN TWO IN BASTROP: At Bastrop, the Killeen Lady Kangaroos closed out the Bastrop Holiday Tournament with wins over Del Valle and Austin Vandegrift.

Killeen held back a late Del Valle charge to win 47-43 and cruised past Vandegrift 61-35.

Tia Harston led the way against Vandegrift with 22 points while Shianne Johnson added 16 and Karyea Oliver chipped in 10. The Lady Roos held Vandegrift to 14 second half points.

Killeen opened the tournament by splitting its Friday games. Killeen beat Manor 69-24, but fell to Leander Rouse 56-41.

Killeen got balanced scoring against Del Valle as four different players scored nine points.

The Lady Roos get back on the court on Friday at District 8-5A foe Belton.


COPPERAS COVE WINS CONSOLATION AT DISD TOURNEY: At Dallas, Copperas Cove defeated Dallas Skyline 50-44  to win the consolation bracket of the DISD Coca Cola Classic.

“It was another great road win for our guys,” said Cove head coach Billy White. “We played a Dallas school, in Dallas with Dallas officials. But we battled through all adversity and came out on top. This was the type of win that you can build on.”

Cove is now 10-9 this season.

Rashard Odomes led Cove in scoring with 17 points and teammate Chance Smith had 10.

HARKER HEIGHTS TOPS CEDAR HILL IN OT: At Austin, Harker Heights defeated Cedar Hill 69-65 in overtime, taking fifth place in the Westlake Holiday Classic on Saturday.

Josh DeLaney led Heights in scoring with 20 points and teammate C.J. Bobbitt had 19.


SHOEMAKER BOYS SPLIT PAIR AT CEDAR PARK TOURNEY: At Cedar Park, the Shoemaker Grey Wolves rebounded from a close loss to Georgetown and routed Round Rock Stony Point at the LISD Christmas Classic Basketball Tournament.

Shoemaker opened the day with a 48-41 loss to Georgetown as Shane Johnson scored a team-best 12 points while Torenzo Saunders added 10.

Johnson led all scorers with 19 points in a 72-54 win over Stony Point. The Grey Wolves entered the second quarter with a one-point deficit, but outscored Stony Point 27-12 to take a lead into halftime.

SHOEMAKER GIRLS FALL TO CONROE: At College Station, the Shoemaker Lady Wolves concluded the McDonald’s Invitational with a 55-51 loss to Conroe.

Jonette Jackson led all Shoemaker (4-13) scorers with 23 points while Shadazia Birchette added 10.

Shoemaker gets back into district play on Friday with a 2:30 p.m. game at Waco Midway.
