Copperas Cove senior Shelbie Letzer was named Midfielder of the Year on the District 8-5A soccer team.
This was the second consecutive year Letzer received the honor.
“I was really excited to get this award this year,” Letzer said.
“I didn’t think I’d be recognized for anything this season because Copperas Cove didn’t make the playoffs.”
Letzer played varsity all four years and earned Newcomer of the Year honors in 2011.
District 8-5A was loaded with talented midfielders this season, which made the 2014 honor extra special to Letzer.
“The strongest players usually do play in the midfield so this was definitely an honor,” Letzer said.
Cove made the playoffs in 2011, 2012 and 2013.
“The positives of this season was that I learned how to handle us not being among the top dogs,” Letzer said.
“I came to know myself better as a person and player. This season, once we were eliminated from making the playoffs, I just played for fun, I didn’t stress out about winning and I actually ended up playing better.”
Letzer finished her career as Cove’s all-time assists leader and was second in school history in goals scored.
Letzer’s close friend, senior Belton defender Jacey Love, shared Overall District MVP honors with Lady Tigers teammate and junior forward Aubrey Martinez.
“Jacey and I have been playing soccer together since we were 12, so I’m thrilled for her,” Letzer said.
“She’s an awesome player and awesome person. Next year, we’ll be playing against each other in college.”
Letzer will play for Incarnate Word; Love will compete for Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
Love’s Belton teammate Briana Davis earned Defensive MVP honors. Also on the first team for co-district champion Belton were forwards Ashley Winkler and Madi Goldston, midfielders Bailee Boren and Jamie Brown and defender Alexis Mack.
Harker Heights earned three superlatives. Caitlin Dumond earned Goalkeeper MVP, Gracie Grimm Newcomer of the Year and Jared Cruddas Coach of the Year.
Heights had three more players earning first-team honors: Kaylee Kellam, E’Talia Graves and Megan Rhorick.
