All-Area Volleyball MVP

Qiana Canete of Copperas Cove High School was named as the 2013 All-Area volleyball MVP.

Qiana Canete could not be stopped.

After producing one of the best individual seasons in program history, Copperas Cove’s standout middle blocker delivered an even more impressive senior campaign.

In her final year as the face of Lady Bulldawgs volleyball, Canete broke the school record for kills in a single season, repeated as both District 8-3A MVP and Killeen Daily Herald All-Area MVP and landed on the all-state team for a second consecutive season.

Meanwhile, her team won its second district championship in a row, finishing the season with a 40-8 record to reach the postseason for a seventh consecutive season.

Her production easily qualifies her as one of the program’s best athletes of all time, but Canete simply wanted to live up to the standard set by those who came before.

“When I was a freshman, there were a lot of older girls, who I thought were awesome,” she said. “I knew I wanted to be like that someday. I just kind of tried to fit into their shoes when they left, and that is what pushed me harder — just to know that I could be as great as them.”

Like many of her role models in the sport, Canete will continue her career in college, committing to play for the University of Texas-Arlington, signing a letter of intent prior to her senior season.

That she was able to live up to her own lofty expectations after dominating as a junior was perhaps her most impressive quality this year, Copperas Cove head coach Cari Lowery said.

“She had to shoulder a lot of responsibility this season being the returning district MVP and also trying to repeat as district champion,” she said. “If it affected her, I never saw it. She was always focused, driven and consistent with her teammates off and on the court.”
