Jessica Vick said it was cherry picking, but the Lady Dawgs' two first-half goals also go back to heart.
Vick and Alyson Sinclair, not giving up on plays, scored two goals on loose balls in the first half of Copperas Cove's 3-1 win over Kerrville Tivy in the championship game of the Lady Dawgs Classic girls soccer tournament Saturday at Bulldawg Stadium.
Vick scored first by thumping a rebounded corner kick into the net and Sinclair gave the Lady Dawgs a 2-0 halftime lead when she scored on a mishandled ball by Tivy goalkeeper Rian Feldman.
"Throughout the seasons playing soccer, I've realized those are like cherry-picking goals, but they're the easiest ones to get," Vick said.
"Someone shot and the goalie fumbled it, if you're always there ... you just give it a little tap and that's it."
The Lady Bulldawgs (6-1) won their fifth straight game and are off to their best start in school history according to head coach Hagen Streckel.
"Extra day rest, the girls were hungry," Streckel said. "They really saw an opportunity and they went for blood today, which was really cool for them to step up."
The Antlers (2-3-1) outshot Cove 3-0 in the first 10 minutes of the second half, but Vick put the Lady Dawgs up 3-0 on a corner kick from Shelbie Letzer eight minutes into the second half.
"Right before we went back after halftime, our coaches warned us that was going to happen. ... And they did, they came out a lot more aggressive, but when another team steps up, you just have to step it back up," Vick said.
The Antlers broke the shutout on Wren Vogel's free kick in the 60th minute and could've trimmed it further, but Cove sophomore goalkeeper Asia Harris blocked a 12-yard penalty kick attempt by Eryn Reyes in the 67th minute.
"When we scored on the free kick, that helped out a lot and raised their spirits and even the PK, another chance to get in the game, but it just didn't fall our way," said Tivy coach Shannon Sletten.
Vick's first goal gave the Lady Dawgs a 1-0 lead in the 18th minute when she tapped Letzer's bobbled-around corner kick into the net.
Feldman actually spoiled Sinclair's first shot attempt following a deep pass from Letzer late in the half, but Feldman failed to completely secure the save and Sinclair was there to capitalize on the Tivy goal keeper's error in the 29th minute.
