Senior Dominic Dungca scored both goals and led the Killeen Kangaroos soccer team to a 2-0 home win over Lampasas on Tuesday night.

“Dominic is the fastest kid we have,” said Roos head coach Aaron Bragewitz. “On our first goal, he just blew by their defense and scored. On the second goal, they took him down, so Dominic scored on a penalty kick.”

Killeen upped its season record to 2-4-1. District play begins next week.

Of his first goal, Dungca said, “I saw the ball in the open field and then ran it down and positioned myself in front of the defender so it was just me and the goalie.”

Dungca then booted home a 15-yarder.

As for his successful penalty-kick, Dungca said, “You always want to aim for the corners. I was relaxed on this one. Once the ref blew the whistle, I hit it to the right corner and it went in.”

“Dominic was great last night,” said Killeen senior goalie Bernardo Moreno. “Actually, he’s always excellent.”

“Truthfully, the beginning of the soccer season is usually challenging for me,” Dungca said. “For me, in the fall, it’s football, football, football. It takes me a while to get my soccer touch back. So, right now, I’m using my strength which is my speed.”

As for Moreno’s play, his second shutout of the season, Dungca said, “Bernardo played real well. He’s real quick on his feet. We have faith in him. When you trust your goalie, as a forward, all you have to worry about is scoring. Lampasas had forwards that attacked, but Bernardo stayed calm and stopped them.”

Early in the contest, Lampasas had a one-on-one breakaway, but Moreno made the save.

“That stop was huge,” Bragewitz said. “Bernardo made several key saves early before we got on the scoreboard.”

“I think the key to the win was the work we did as a team,” Moreno said. “Our midfielders and our defenders worked real well together.

“We’re looking great right now. We didn’t make the playoffs last year and that’s something we definitely want to do this season. I think we have the potential to do it.”
