A lot of athletes have good seasons, but few help make history.

Shoemaker senior defensive back and wide receiver Dwayne Williams did both. He led the Grey Wolves to their best season since the school opened in 2000, including a playoff appearance. He also was named to the all-state team.

“That was always the goal to make all state or do something big,” Williams said. “I’m proud of myself that I got it accomplished. I couldn’t do it without my teammates.”

Williams was a ball hawk with 10 interceptions, including one returned for a touchdown. He totaled 276 yards on 10 returns.

“Every time the ball was in the air, I knew what I had to do in order to help my team be successful,” Williams said. “Whenever I saw the ball, I just made a play on it.”

Williams’ all-state first-team selection at cornerback didn’t surprise Shoemaker head coach Channon Hall.

“He has the full package. He can run, he can jump, he’s strong, he’s quick and has good hand-eye coordination. He can do a lot of different things well at a high level and I think that makes him a great athlete.”

Hall also said one of the reasons Williams was so good was the work ethic he and other members of the team displayed in practice.

“They were so competitive,” Hall said. “With Dwayne at corner, Nahome Anderson and Qwoy Blunt out there as receivers, they had battles every day and it was a competition of who could get the best of each other. They had fun with it, were ultra competitive each day and all of that work and all that trash talking they did to one another paid off.”

The Grey Wolves finished third in district after winning just two games in 2012. Shoemaker’s only previous postseason appearance came in 2008.
